Learning Objectives :

At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:

  • Review epidemiology of multi-drug resistant (MDR) gram negative pathogens, specifically carbapenem resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE), in the US.
  • Describe the β-lactamase enzyme classification system and the role of metallo-β-lactamase (MBL) in select pathogens.
  • Describe gram negative bacteria resistance mechanisms and the clinical utility of rapid diagnostic tests (RDT) in select pathogens.
  • Discuss optimal treatment strategies for select metallo-β-lactamases (MBL) carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) pathogens.
